DENTON, Texas — Denton County has opened applications for a residential safe-room rebate that can cover half of eligible installation costs, up to $3,000 per approved home. Funding is available for 166 safe rooms, according to county program information shared by the City of Lewisville.

The program is intended to help homeowners improve protection from severe weather. Denton County says eligible properties must be in a participating area covered by its hazard mitigation plan. The county will verify ownership, location, floodplain status and other requirements. Lewisville residents are among those eligible to apply.

Applications are open through April 2027. The county expects to choose applicants at random and review submissions in April, with notices in April or May. Applying does not guarantee a rebate. The county says it will randomly select up to 166 applicants, then check each property and homeowner for eligibility. People who qualify after the first selection may be placed on a waiting list if funding is exhausted. Selected homeowners must meet program rules before beginning work.

Do not buy or install a safe room before written county approval. Previously installed rooms are ineligible, and applicants who proceed early risk losing the rebate. Approved participants pay the project cost upfront, then submit proof of installation for reimbursement. The county says payment could take several months.

Eligible rooms may be inside, attached to or separate from the home, above or below ground, if they meet applicable safety, permit and inspection standards. The county's program page has application steps and qualifications. Questions can go to saferoom@dentoncounty.gov or 940-349-2855.
