DENTON, Texas — The University of North Texas expects to open its new Science and Technology Building in spring 2027, though it has not announced an exact date. A recent tour showed the facility nearing completion, Community Impact reported Oct. 16.
The four-story building is going up at West Mulberry Street and Avenue C on UNT's Denton campus. The university describes it as a 111,000-square-foot research and teaching facility financed with $103.4 million in tuition revenue bonds authorized by the Texas Legislature in 2021. Construction began after an August 2024 groundbreaking.
UNT says the building will give students and faculty modern space for work spanning biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics, data science, computer science and other fields. The planned layout includes research laboratories, collaboration areas and spaces where students can build and test projects. Community Impact's tour described clinical research rooms, makerspaces, visualization tools and offices across the building's research floors.
The new space is meant to bring researchers from different programs together and support hands-on learning. UNT has said growing research activity has strained its existing facilities. The building is a university project, so its opening would primarily affect students, faculty and research partners; public access to the labs has not been announced.
A UNT spokesperson told Community Impact a ribbon-cutting is expected in early 2027. That event and the spring opening remain targets until the university publishes dates. People visiting campus should check UNT Facilities for any construction-related parking or access changes near the site.
The project is separate from the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building already used for classes and events on Mulberry Street.
